Careers Information Advice Support & Guidance is central to our ethos at St Mary's College. Every student receives CIASG throughout their school life. Even before students commence their secondary schooling all Year 6 students take part in a programmed transition process to help them settle in more easily and aid transition from the Primary to the Secondary phase. This programme culminates in a week of various activities within St Mary’s in July before they join us in September.
Students who leave us to go on to Further or Higher Education, Employment or Training are guided onto the appropriate pathways and are encouraged to, and do seek our guidance after they have left us.
Every member of staff in St Mary’s, whether teaching or non teaching is fully committed and involved in CIASG in some form at every stage of a student’s development. This could be as a personal tutor, a learning mentor, a teaching assistant, head of year or a subject teacher. All staff have training, but there are several staff who have professional qualifications within the auspices of CIASG and are attached to each year group, supported by an excellent team of Connexions Advisers, who are in school every day.
Resources
There is a Careers / Connexions office on Ruth Corridor and similar accommodation in the Sixth Form, where students can access paper and computer based information resources . The Learning Resource Centre also has a good stock of information including copies of local Further Education and Higher Education prospectuses. Website and CIASG computer based packages can be easily accessed through the school Intranet via all College computers.

The vast majority of employers have either met or expect to meet their graduate recruitment targets for 2009 and nearly one third (32.9%) plan to increase their target numbers, according to a snapshot survey published last week by the Association of Graduate Recruiters (AGR).
The snapshot survey also shows that employer confidence in the UK economy is higher than three months ago, with half (49.4%) of the 85 respondents saying they were 'slightly' or 'much' more confident. Only one in twenty of the respondents (5.9%), who came from a wide range of industry sectors including banking, law, IT and engineering, said they were less confident about their own businesses prospects than three months ago. The remainder are expecting business to pick up in 2010.
In line with this cautiously optimistic outlook and despite many recruiters having to tighten their belts in the coming recruitment year, three fifths (61.1%) of employers plan to spend the same amount of time or more on campus to attract graduates and over three quarters (76.4%) expect their graduate recruitment targets to increase or at least stay the same in 2010.
