Health & Social Care

The Health and Social Care Department is now part of the Science Faculty.  The following two teachers currently deliver Health and Social Care:

Experienced Science teachers will be involved of in the delivery of any specialised science based units of the BTEC National in Health and Social Care.

Vocational courses in Health & Social Care have been delivered by enthusiastic and experienced teachers for over 10 years. Accelerated learning, progression and flexibility in moving to different level of courses demonstrate the Health & Social Care teachers dedication to meet individual student needs and to raising standards. All students are expected to undertake some form of work-related learning. Work experience placements and visits are compulsory and are incorporated into each individual student programme to enhance independent learning and to develop key skills. As a forward-thinking team, we work closely together sharing good practice, innovative ideas and have a vision for the future.

Year 9 - 11

BTEC First Diploma in Health and Social Care (4 GCSEs A*- C)

This qualification is offered to students as an optional subject.   The course is assessed through the production of six coursework portfolios (no exams).

The following two units to be studied are compulsory:

Unit 1:  Communication and Individual Rights within the Health and Social Care Sectors.

Unit 2:  Individual Needs within the Health and Social Care Sectors

A further 4 units are chosen from the following:

*Unit 3:  Vocational Experience in Health or Social Care Setting – this unit requires students to complete a two week placement in a health and social care setting during Year 10 work experience.

*Unit 4:  Cultural Diversity in Health and Social Care

Unit 5:  Anatomy and Physiology for Health and Social CareUnit 6 Human Lifespan Development

*Unit 7 : Creative and Therapeutic Activities

Unit 8:  Health and Social Care Services

*Unit 9:  The Impact of Diet on Health

*Indicates the units currently studied

Year 12 (one year course)

BTEC First Certificate in Children’s Care, Learning and Development
(2 GCSEs A-C)
This course will be provided as part of a package including other level 2 subjects and involves students completing a one day work experience placement each week in a childcare setting.

Students will study the following three units:

Unit 1:  Understanding Children’s Development
Unit 2:  Keeping children Safe
Unit 3:  Communication with Children and Adults

Year 12 – 13 (two year course)

BTEC National Diploma in Health and Social Care

This course will replace the GCE Applied Health and Social Care course. 
The course in assessed through the production of portfolio pieces of coursework (no exams).  One day each week students will be on work placement in a health and social care setting (e.g. nursery, primary school, residential home etc) to gain relevant experience and help put theory into practice.

Students will study 8 core units in the first year:

Units
Unit 1: Developing Effective Communication in Health and Social Care
Unit 2: Equality, Diversity and Rights in Health and Social Care
Unit 3: Health, Safety and Security in Health and Social Care
Unit 4: Development Through the Life Stages
Unit 5: Fundamentals of Anatomy and Physiology for Health and
Social Care
Unit 6: Personal and Professional Development in Health and Social
Care * Students to complete 100 hours work experience in three different health and social care settings (one day a week over two years)
Unit 7: Sociological Perspectives for Health and Social Care
Unit 8: Psychological Perspectives for Health and Social Care

In the second year students will study an additional 10 optional units covering various Health and Social Care related topics.

Year 13

GCE Applied Health and Social Care (Single and Double Award)

On successful completion of Year 12 AS level students will then progress onto the Year 13 A2 course.

Students will complete units 7 – 9 for the single award and 7 – 12 for the double award:

Unit 7:  Meeting Individual Needs (examined unit)
Unit 8:  Promoting Health and Well-Being (coursework unit)
Unit 9:  Investigating Diseases (coursework unit)
Unit 10:  Using and Understanding Research (coursework unit)
Unit 11:  Social Issues and Welfare Needs (coursework unit)
Unit 12:  Understanding Human Behaviour (examined unit)
