St. Mary’s College Peer mentoring programme has been running for nine years. Initially we had 15 year 12 mentors, that has gradually increased to 25 year 10 mentors and 22 year 12 mentors. Our programme has accreditation with both the Mentoring and Befriending Foundation and the Open College Network. On successful completion of their training, mentors are awarded credits at level 2 in Education Skills from
Training takes place off-site and is over one day for year 12 and two days for year 9. We also train students from three other schools in
Our programme has been held up as an example of good practise and, because of this, we have taken part in two government-led peer mentoring pilot projects .At present we are involved in a third two- year pilot concerned with anti-bullying and are fortunate enough to have Robert Higgs delivering anti-bullying workshops to our year 9 students on one of our training days. (you can access the work he does at http://www.roberthiggs.co.uk/) We hope then to incorporate the work the mentors do into the whole-school anti-bullying policy.
We have been fortunate enough this year to have been given our own room where mentoring can take place. We are in the process of setting up a “drop-in” centre where students who don’t need a long-term mentor can go at break or lunch-time and talk to a mentor about any issues they might have.
